15 Things Every New Homeowner Needs
So you’ve bought a new home… Congratulations! Now it’s time to make sure you have a few essential items every homeowner needs—especially those things you may not think about until you suddenly need them. Sure, you probably already have the basics like shower curtains, cutlery organizers, and a vacuum cleaner. But there are always those “must-have” items that slip through the cracks. Here’s a helpful list of essentials that may have fallen off your radar.
- Grill
Nothing beats the taste of freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs, or steaks. A grill says “welcome to my backyard” better than anything else—and it’s a lifesaver when the power goes out. A delicious dinner is still served!
- An Emergency Kit
Be prepared with enough supplies to last at least three days. Include water (a gallon per day per person), non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, a radio, rain slickers, warm jackets, and blankets.
- A Security System
If your budget allows, consider installing a monitored home security system for added peace of mind. Even the sign in your yard can deter many criminals. If a system isn’t an option, add extra deadbolts, window latches, and outdoor floodlights.
- A Hidden Key
Everyone locks themselves out sooner or later. Have an extra key made and hide it securely. Magnetic boxes work well under HVAC units or inside gutters, and disguised hide-a-key options like faux rocks or garden décor are helpful too.
- Sturdy Outdoor Garbage Cans
Some communities provide trash and recycling bins, but many do not. Check your HOA or local guidelines so you’re ready on move-in day.
- Lawn Equipment
If you’re transitioning from an apartment or condo where lawn care was included, you may not remember to pick up a mower, rake, clippers, hoses, or a weed eater. In certain climates, it only takes a week or two for a yard to become overgrown—so plan ahead!
- Essential Tool Box
First-time homeowners often overlook basic tools like screwdrivers, hammers, measuring tapes, pliers, and more. Many hardware stores offer beginner tool kits perfect for household needs—even if you’re not especially handy.
- Ladder
A ladder is one of the most commonly forgotten—but most needed—household items. You’ll quickly need one to change light bulbs, reach high shelves, clean, or decorate.
- Toilet Plungers
Ahem… yes. You’ll need one for each bathroom. Add a toilet brush with a storage holder to your list while you’re at it.
- Super Glue
A tube of strong adhesive handles countless quick fixes and small household repairs. Keep one or two in your junk drawer for emergencies.
- Extension Cords & Surge Protectors
Outlets won’t always be where you need them. Stock up on various lengths of extension cords (indoor/outdoor, heavy-duty varieties) and plug valuable electronics like computers and gaming systems into surge protectors.
- Tarps
Tarps are useful for protecting outdoor items like grills, lawn equipment, and patio furniture. They’re also great for covering plants during a frost.
- Three Important Books
Every home should have: a great all-purpose cookbook (Better Homes & Gardens, Fanny Farmer, or The Joy of Cooking), a home repair/maintenance guide, and a cleaning and household-tips book such as Hints from Heloise.
- Doormats
Protect your floors by placing a doormat at every entrance. This simple addition keeps dirt, mud, and debris from being tracked inside.
- A Small Safe or Lockbox
Keep your important documents, valuables, and sensitive items in one secure, fireproof, easily portable place.
