Home Scents – Reflecting Your Unique Personality

Many people are surprised when they hear that only one of our senses is fully developed and functional when we’re born… and even more surprised to learn that it is our sense of smell. Possibly our most underrated sense, our sense of smell reigns supreme when we’re children. Until about age 10, children perceive their world primarily through what they smell, rather than what they see or hear.

The main reason for this is that the sense of smell is the only one that has a direct pathway to the amygdala and hippocampus — the parts of your brain responsible for processing emotion and memory. People remember what they smell more clearly and for twice as long as things they see or hear. In fact, after three months, people can remember a scent with 65% accuracy, while they can only remember about 50% of what they see.

How can this information influence the way you use scent in your home? First of all, it’s important to know how our bodies — and our moods — react to certain scents. By infusing our homes with fragrances that promote well-being and comfort, we can improve daily life and make our home more inviting to guests. Because so few people understand the importance of scent, it can also subtly encourage positive behaviors and dispel negative feelings.

Let’s take a closer look at some popular home scents and how they influence our moods:

Boosting Happiness: If you’re looking to banish gloom, bright scents such as citrus can give you a lift, while grassy green scents often bring back happy childhood memories spent outdoors. Red fruit scents — berries, cherries, plums, apples — tend to spark a sense of optimism.

Improving Focus: Need to concentrate or get things done? Scents with hints of peppermint, rosemary, jasmine, eucalyptus, cinnamon, coffee, or additional citrus notes can help stimulate alertness. You don’t even need to drink the coffee; its aroma alone can perk you up!

Relaxing and Unwinding: Lavender is widely known as a scent that promotes better sleep. Earthy notes like pine, balsam, wood, or leather can also create a sense of calm.

Setting a Romantic Mood: Sandalwood, almond, pumpkin, patchouli, musk, and — surprisingly — vanilla often evoke feelings of warmth and romance. Surveys show that vanilla is the scent most likely to put many men in a flirty mood.

When considering how fragrance can enhance your home, you also need to think about how the scent is delivered. Traditional methods remain the most popular — candles, sprays, potpourri, incense, and fragrance diffusers — and each has its pros and cons:

  • Candles: Beautiful and atmospheric, but hazardous around pets or children. Heat can lessen fragrance strength.
  • Potpourri: Strongly scented and decorative, but can spill or be accidentally ingested.
  • Diffusers: Offer consistent scent without heat and often serve as a decorative element.
  • Room/Linen Sprays: Short-lived but great for instant fragrance exactly where you want it.

One of the newer and more innovative systems is cold air diffusion, where cool air pushes scented oil through a nebulizer, creating a fine vapor that remains suspended in the air. This method is considered one of the most effective, consistent ways to scent your home. Aromatech is a leading provider of home scent machines — explore their products here.

Many scent experts combine several delivery methods to create a layered, intentional sensory experience. You can strengthen a single fragrance by using candles, diffusers, and sprays in the same scent — or craft your own signature scent by mixing aromas and delivery systems throughout your home.
