All Decked Out!

Deck and Outdoor Living Ideas for Summer

With summer now in full swing, people are getting outside and enjoying their decks even more! If you don’t have a deck, you’re probably considering adding one right now. Nothing seems more inviting than dining outside, throwing a party, or shooing your children outdoors so you can have a few moments of peace and quiet.

If you’re lucky enough to already have a deck, you know that the possibilities for relaxation and entertainment are endless—especially when your home is designed with outdoor living in mind. Many of our new home floor plans offer spacious patios or the option to add your own outdoor oasis. Need some tips for decking out your deck? Here are some great ways to ramp it up!

Furniture

Go beyond the standard puff-cushioned wire chairs surrounding a scroll table or bulky wooden Adirondack chairs. Today’s outdoor furniture comes in so many styles and colors that you can truly tailor your deck décor to match your personality. Consider water-resistant wicker, comfy chaises, or even a free-standing hammock. Like napping on your deck? Try a patio daybed. Always short on seating when entertaining? Portable, playful poufs are instant chairs that kids, teens, and even adults love. You can even be the envy of your neighborhood with a full-service outdoor bar.

Lighting

Tiki torches or white holiday lights are fun, but for a more sophisticated touch, think about post and stair lighting (which you can put on a timer, if you like) or solar-powered accent lights. Bistro lighting is the newest craze—this European-inspired trend is hot, hot, hot!

Awnings

If you’re looking to beat the heat, nothing is better than staying out of the sun. A retractable awning can provide essential shade during the day and then disappear when the sun goes down. Enjoy the shady times ahead!

Deck Boxes

These handy high-fashion pieces store cushions, lawn games, children’s outdoor toys, gardening tools, or other outdoor essentials—but they also serve as handy benches. Keep tidy and be comfy at the same time with a stylish deck box.

Deck Gardens

Lovely to look at and fragrant to smell, bright flowers are always a plus on your deck. Grow herbs for extra-fresh flavor or try tomatoes, strawberries, or other easy-to-grow produce. Gardening is also a wonderful activity for children. If you love customizing your outdoor environment, you’ll also enjoy the choices available in our Ernest Homes Design Studio.

Invite Rover Over

Give your dog a break too—consider a pet-safe splash pool or shaded area on your deck. Your four-legged family members deserve summer comfort as well.

Add a Water Garden or Fountain

Tranquil, relaxing, and serene, a water garden or fountain adds a touch of class to your outdoor oasis and creates soothing background sound.

Grill Safe

Everyone loves to grill on the deck, but there are always concerns about fire safety. Consider a wood pellet grill or a heavy-duty grill mat for extra protection and peace of mind.
